Joining: http://www.the-elite.net/ngc/Joining/HowToJoin.html I describe setting up an account with http://www.110mb.com, and then copying in the html from a blank score page(if you're new), or from the score page that was generated from the NGC-Elite data. Since most everyone here was a member of NGC, you'll want to skip to Step 6 after setting up a tripod account. Once you have your page set up, post a link to it in here. Forgive me for being n00bish. So, the "manual" is said to be in french. If someone is cabable of coding and know how to use google translater of talk to a french person, could it be possible? It just seems so blehheemeeh to let it die and not even do anything, but maybe it's too hard and I simply don't get it.

The website runs off of a MySQL database, which is still intact and online. The website itself is coded in html(obviously), and php to interact with the database(updating scores, registering new members, getting member information, updating the front page news, and so on) and also uses php to calculate the rankings. I don't know exactly the details on how this is done, since there is a lot of webpages and the code is not well commented or easy to follow. Overall, there are over 2,000 different files that compromise NGC-Elites. Several hundred of these are the html/php webpages. The security bug that was likely used to screw over the website is called an SQL injection attack. This takes advantage of the fact that input to the website, such as a new user's username, or a user's email address, or so on and on, is not checked properly. By submitting unusual inputs, such as for and email address for example, an attacker can make SQL statements calls to the database. This is BAD. The "quick" and dirty solution would be to go through all of the php files for the site and make sure input is being checked correctly. This would require a fairly good knowledge of how the site works as a whole and a pretty good knowledge of php. Because of the complexity of the site, getting a good idea of how it works is difficult and this is compounded by the fact that the code is poorly commented and in french. There are hundreds of pages to go through, and there are only a few users that were still using the site when it went down. It is not worth the work. It would probably be better the scrap most of the site and rebuild and recode it as a Timesplitter's series only rankings site. The current database could be used, but it would be a bit of a headache figuring out how that is put together. I probably could pull that off, but it would be involved hours of work(like all of my spare time for a month or two), and it isn't worth that. The few people who were interested before the site went down are even fewer now. I don't care as much about it as it seems, but since no one else talks about it that much I feel like I at least should give a try. It's just a sad to see it getting burried because of this annoying stuff (even though I probably wouldn't play the games more anyway). Obviously there would only be a TS site if we put it back up and the whole thing would very likely need to be scrapped and done from scratch. I've toyed with it a little myself way back when but I am no longer a coder not to mention I'm busy myself these days. Could we perhaps could get someone to update records or something on a page somewhere though? Bah that's really vague isn't it? Basically though the games are all but dead--yes not having rankings really effected that part but there aren't enough that would come back to really do much of it imo. I remember the beginning days where it took forever even just to update things and after a ton of hours and whatnot then some idiots had to go on and ruin it for the rest of us.

I'm reconsidering about rebuilding the site. I went into the ngc database tonight and checked the score tables for the TS games. Conveniently for me, the score tables also list all of the username information along with them. I exported them to an excel file and from there saved them as a pure text file. Getting all of the scores and associated usernames out of the database ended up being far easier than I was fearing. Didn't even have to write a single SQL statement. So what I'm thinking about doing is this: Rather than have a membership-based website running off of a database, which is what ngc was previously, I'll rebuild the site so that it is run and updated in much the same way as the Goldeneye/PD rankings. This will be good since all that will be put online will be just regular html files. The disadvantage is that all of the users of the site will now have to manage their own html page for their scores, which is less convenient, but I'm not as worried since it isn't likely there will be all that many people using the site. It isn't all that difficult anyway. 300+ people on the GE rankings could figure it out. Doing it this way will also mean less coding and time on my part since I won't be dealing with setting up a new database or trying to work with the old one while doing a redesign. It's still going to be a major undertaking. One thing that has to be considered is that the existing scores all have to be converted to regular html pages. I should be able to write up a program that will automate this task after I figure out how the score pages will need to be layed out. There's something like 1500 score pages that need to be done across the three games, so yeah. From there, any previous user who is still active can just create their own score page(similar to GE or PD), upload it to wherever and then inform me so that I'll add them to the updater and they can have control over their scores. I'll have to write an updater for the three games, which might be a challenge. One thing that may be useful to me is if anyone has the code for the GE/PD updater so that I can see how it works. The TS updater will be a bit harder to do since not every stage is based on best time. I'll also have to come up with a new site design, something which I'm not great at, but we'll see. We can't copy the those rankings, because only a couple of categories are a level with Easy, Normal and Hard, so I tried to think of something a while ago. My idea was something like this plus player name or initials (I don't know where those would fit). Anyway, good luck.

Yes, all of the existing scores and players are going to kept. I'll be converting all of the existing profiles to html pages similar to the GE Score Pages. As far as updating your scores and such, my goal is to have everything work like the Goldeneye ranks, so you'll have to set up an account with geocities or wherever and update your own scores by hand. I checked the scores that I dumped from the database, and it looks like your profile and scores are fine for what I'll be doing. As for progress: Right now I'm working on the basic templates for the player's score pages. They'll be fairly simple in looks(like the GE score pages), but if you know some html, you'll be able to customize them to the same extent if you want. I don't have aim at the moment, and I'd rather not get it again since I'll never use it. A couple of questions about it: Is it possible to specify how a stage should be ranked? For the rankings, there are stages where the fastest time is highest ranked, there are stages where the highest time is ranked highest(virus stages where 3 mins is best, and anything lower is worse). There are stages ranked by greatest number of kills, and there are stages ranked by highest percentage. Would the custom updater be able to handle that? It was worth a shot. I finished making the templates for the score pages for each of the three games. They're basically tables listing the stages for each game with default score values entered in. They're kind of close to the ngc rankings as far as looks go, but more simplified. Tomorrow I'll start work on getting everyone's scores converted into html pages.
